If your Mississippi based ISP does not currently carry the ms.* Usenet news groups please refer your Usenet News Administrator to this Web Page.
Latest Changes:
Phillip Moore definitely deserves the credit for its creation.
On 1 October 1997, at 12:29 PM, Cam Proctor, The System Administrator at PowerNET ISP posted to ms.general the question "has anyone heard anything new on the shooting this morning?". Over the next 2 weeks, the thread generated over 118 responses, shattering all previous ms.* thread-length records in the process.
On 29 December 1999, a post to ms.linux was made by Datasync's IRC
Administrator, and over the next day and a half, over 45 posts were added to the
thread, shattering all previous ms.linux thread-length records in the process. "Team SMLUG"
became "Team ms.linux",
and world fame followed shortly thereafter. Maybe.
Non ms.linux-subscribers can read the followups, courtesy of kopower.com,
until the articles expire.
i was looking for a program to keep track of my machine's best uptimes at
freshmeat and came across a website at www.uptimes.net. basically they have
created a database that keeps track of uptimes for various peoples machines.
once you have signed up for an account and added a hostname to keep track of,
you can download the client, which will update your current uptime every so
often. there are clients available for both linux and the less known os
windows.
i just wish i had come across this before i rebooted yesterday :(
Who is coordinating? No one, really. We'll either cooperate and it will flourish or we'll squabble and it will disintegrate.
New sites aren't going to pick it up until someone puts them in contact with a site that does carry it to arrange a feed. The ms.* groups have thankfully not been leaked to the backbones [we have since been leaked to the backbones] where the spammer-infested online services would ruin them. [we have since been spammed]
In the short term, discussion should probably be the driving force for new groups. In the long run, we can discuss ms.config. In the even longer run, we can discuss voting procedures.
It may be time to collect some information: what is this thing called the ms.* usenet hierarchy, where did it come from, and where is it going? This might even result in a FAQ, to be served up at strategic points within MISNET. If a Mississippi based ISP doesn't carry ms.*, internal pressure might make it happen -- but only if we can get the word out.
It kinda irks that not all of the ISPs in Mississippi carry the ms.* Usenet groups. Teclink which has a large number of Jackson users doesn't seem to carry it, and attempts at dialog on the IRC locations that mississippians meet at were not succesful.

NOTE: MUW does not run their own news server; msstate allows
NNTP connections from their domain.
NOTE: Netdoor has outsourced their News Service (again?). The
level of participation of the largest ISP in Mississippi
within the ms.* club remains uncertain.
