In order to install the Goldinc Internet Startup Kit, exit out of Windows and execute INSTALL.BAT on the disk provided. You may have already done that, but keep reading, since there's more you have to do ...

You'll be required to read a dire warning about software retrieved via the Internet and some necessary Legal stuff, after which a GOLDINC directory will be created on the Hard Disk you specify.

After the installation script has completed, you should start Windows and run "Trumpet Winsock" from the Goldinc program group. Trumpet Winsock, also known as TCPMAN.EXE, is the software that provides other programs with a connection to the Internet. It does this by having your modem dial up our modems. You will have to enter some configuration for TCPMAN before it can successfully connect your computer to the Internet.

After reading the license agreement, you'll be presented with a Setup dialog. Change the following fields, leaving all others unchanged:

Name server: 63.164.70.2
Domain suffix: goldinc.com
Internal PPP: Checked (will uncheck Internal SLIP)
SLIP Port: The number of the COM port your modem
                   is on: 1 for COM1, 2 for COM2, etc.
Van Jacobsen CSLIP Compression: Checked

Press OK to accept these settings. Trumpet will restart. Do NOT enter anything in the "PPP Options" menu!

Connect to Goldinc by selecting Dialler..Login on the TCPMAN menu. You'll be prompted to enter the phone number to use, 8650400

If you have Call Waiting, you may want to prepend *70, to the number to disable Call Waiting while you're on-line. Otherwise you'll be disconnected abruptly whenever another call comes in. If you want to disable calling waiting, use *70,8650400 as the phone number.

When prompted, enter your Login ID, which is also known as "your username". Be sure to type in your username in lower case! If you enter your username or password incorrectly, things will not work, and you'll need to edit the TRMPWSK.INI file to remove the incorrect entries.

After you enter your username, Trumpet Winsock will prompt for your password. You should then hear TCPMAN dialing the modem to establish the PPP connection.

If you get a "Modem not responding" message, you may be trying the wrong COM port. Do not re-run INSTALL. In Trumpet Winsock (aka TCPMAN), select File..Setup and try a different COM port number in the SLIP Port box. Be sure to exit and restart TCPMAN after changing this.

Another cause of "Modem not responding" can be an incorrect modem initialization string. The default, &c1&k3, does not work with all modems. If this is the problem, select Dialler..Edit scripts in TCPMAN and choose LOGIN.CMD. The modem init string is in this line:

$modemsetup = "&c1&k3"
Try placing "q0v1e1s0=0" or "&f" in place of the "&c1&k3".

Once connected, minimize TCPMAN by clicking the down arrow in the upper right-hand corner (do NOT close or quit) and start exploring with the other software.

WS_FTP is a free FTP client, which you can use for retrieving software from Internet archives to your computer. A number of interesting FTP sites are preconfigured, including one from which you can download the latest version of Netscape.

BCGopher is a free Gopher client developed at Boston College. While the Web may be the current rage, there is still a lot of information accessable through Gopher servers on the Internet. It is preconfigured to access Boston College's Gopher server from which you can jump to many others.

Trmptel is a free telnet client. With it you can access a wide selection of bulletin boards and other services on the Internet.

When you're ready to log off, select Dialler..Bye on the TCPMAN menu.

Be sure to register your copy of Trumpet soon after you begin using it. While you're logged in, select Special..Register from the TCPMAN menu and click "Register Via Internet". They'll send you mail in response with a Registration Password which you'll have to enter to deactivate the time lock.

If you want your Winsock apps to automatically start TCPMAN and connect to Goldinc (if not already connected) when you run them, select Dialler..Options in TCPMAN, choose "Automatic Login on Start Up Only", and restart TCPMAN.
