Ride Sweeper Responsibilities
Co-pilot
You are the ride leader's second in command. Work with the ride
leader to keep the group together and the ride safe.
Count Noses
Before the group starts out, get a head count of the riders in
the group. Ask if anyone has other plans that deviate from the planned
route.
Check your six
Watch for traffic from behind and call out "CAR BACK."
If the vehicle truns off instead of passing call out "CLEAR BACK."
In harms way
Ride to the outside of the last rider in the group. This forces
traffic out away from the rest of the riders in the line.
Spot the bonk
Watch for riders who seem to be having extreme difficulty or
look ill. Advise them to drop the ride, call for a lift, or send a rider
back with them. Just because they say they are OK doesn’t mean they
are.
Whoa
Be prepared to sprint to the lead position to keep the ride leader
appraised of riders who may be struggling or have mechanical failures.
You may need to call for extra breaks or slow the pace of the ride.
Move 'em out
Encourage stragglers to keep with the
group. Weak riders should ride mid-group not at the tail.
Lost one
Communicate when riders drop off deviate from the route.
Where did they go?
Know the planned route, regroup riders who get separated.
Take charge
Be prepared to take charge of any unusual or emergency situation.
Know the location of emergency services located along your route.
