ROCK CLIMBING

On a First Ascent, our secret climbing area
Our climbing activities require extensive training from our Scoutmasters
and Climbing Specialist ASMs, without whom we would not be able to participate
in this great adventure. Our training goes far beyond the Climbing
Merit Badge and has been enough to allow us to safely go with our staff
on exciting and challenging trips in the region. Additionally, some
of the older scouts have actually worked as junior guides with our pet
outfitter High Plains Outdoor Institute on their commercial trips.
Most of our rock climbing takes place at the conveniently located world-class
climbing area of Vedauwoo, just twenty minutes out of town.
This place is great, with a bit of everything, from easy to advanced, top-roping
to lead climbing, and single to multi-pitched climbs. (Not to mention
the wide variation in the climbs themselves — faces, cracks, chimneys,
lie-backs, nearly everything you can imagine is there.)
We usually spend most of our time at the Nautilus and Valley Massif, though
we have been known to frequent many other parts of the area.
Troop Climbs in the past have included the Medicine Bow "Diamond" a 5 pitch
alpine climb on Medicine Bow Mountain in the Snowy Range, the North Face
of Longs Peak in Colorado, Crestone Needle in Colorado and Devils Tower
in Northern Wyoming.
Besides Vedauwoo, we have also spent time climbing at the Inner Strength
rock gym in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Soon we should have pictures from the nearly complete huge rock gym right
here in Laramie. Some of us have participated in helping build in
that gym with Dr. John Ackerman, the owner.
